Trainer – Digital Futures (Volunteer)
Context
Westgate Refugee Support provides teaching, resources and financial support to schools for children from Myanmar who are displaced and living in Malaysia. Since 2013 Westgate Refugee Support volunteers have been supporting schools run by refugee communities.
In 2023, WRS launched Digital Futures, a digital literacy program at two of its partner schools to:
Build students’ information technology skills.
Teach students protective practices to reduce the risk of exploitation through online communication.
Digital Futures is based on the UNESCO Global Framework on Digital Literacy.
In 2025, WRS plans to expand Digital Futures to additional partner schools. To facilitate this growth and support current teachers, WRS is seeking a Trainer to provide training and assistance to teachers in teaching computer skills and digital literacy. The schools are located centrally in Kuala Lumpur.
The Trainer will deliver in-person training and support at partner schools in Kuala Lumpur. They will collaborate with the WRS Education Lead Digital Futures. Communication with the Education Lead will be by digital communication.
This is a volunteer position. We will discuss with candidates whether they undertake the role for a limited term or as a regular commitment. The role is part time and can be configured around the time availability of the candidate.
Key Responsibilities
The Trainer will:
Collaborate with the Digital Futures Education Lead to plan and develop digital literacy training for teachers at partner schools.
Deliver training to teachers at schools partnering with WRS in the Digital Futures program.
Co-teach digital literacy classes with teachers at partner school to build the capacity of the teachers to independently teach information technology and digital literacy.
Contribute to creating a culturally relevant digital literacy curriculum tailored to the needs of students.
Design lesson plans and develop educational resources for teachers involved in the Digital Futures program.
Provide coaching and support to teachers at partner schools.
Facilitate opportunities for trained teachers to share their teaching experiences, lesson plans, and provide mutual support.
Undertake other activities aligned with the objectives of the Digital Futures program.
Experience in teaching or training.
Ability to design and prepare teaching or training programs and materials.
A commitment to adult learning principles and an empowering approach to training.
Proficiency in information technology and computer skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
Strong cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
Demonstrated initiative, drive, and problem-solving skills.
Strong self-management skills with the ability to plan and prioritise tasks effectively.
